Webinar: Puzzling Real-Time Supply Chain Problems, Impacting Sustainability

Zero Waste Iftar with Majid Al Futtaim

6, 7, 8, and 14 May 2022

The Green Spoon was at  the Dubai Food Festival in collaboration with Ripe Events. We ran "Food Waste Warrior" talks and Sustainable Cooking Workshops that saw vast participation from Dubai residents, including families and groups of friends. The highly interactive and fun sessions were held under two themes:

1. Cooking with "ugly vegetables" - drawing attention to the diversity and fun in nature.

2. Cooking with 3 ingredients - challenging the participant to be creative with limited ingredients.

Our chefs demonstrated planet-friendly recipies while we informed the participants about how our food choices relate to sustainability, the importance of choosing plant-based and local, composting, and strategies to reduce household level food waste.

Zero Waste Iftar with Majid Al Futtaim

21 April 2022

The Green Spoon was assigned to ensure no food and single-use plastic packaging waste is left behind after Majid Al Futtaim's corporate iftar with more than a thousand guests.

For that, we replated the surplus food with biodegradable and compostable eco-packaging to be distributed to disadvantaged communities in the UAE via the UAE Food Bank.

We also teamed up with our composting partner, Sharjah Univeristy's community garden, to make sure food scraps and waste are upcycled to be used as fertilizer.

In this way, we distributed 214 portions of surplus food and composted more than 300 kgs of food scraps and food waste!

Keep in touch to know more about upcoming events like this and how you can contribute to tackling food waste in the UAE!

Webinar: Women Empowerment - Disparities Between the Developed and the Developing World

28 March 2022

The typical company's supply chain creates far greater social and environmental costs than its own operations, accounting for more than 80% of its greenhouse-gas emissions and more than 90% of the impact on air, land, water, biodiversity, and geological resources (McKinsey, 2016).   Besides the environmental impacts, there are also real-time supply chain problems in cases where organizations would like to implement operational changes, however, this impacts their revenue streams.  During this session, we addressed some real-time supply chain problems and had an open discussion with the attendees on how this could be resolved.  Join us for some healthy debates and fresh insights!

Webinar: Women Empowerment - Disparities Between the Developed and the Developing World

14 March 2022

Women, often said to be the "largest minority" in the world, hold very different backgrounds, capabilities, and potential depending on where they are located. The general approach of "Women Empowerment" often fails to address these disparities and disregards the practical needs of women of different backgrounds. Moreover, this approach can be counter-productive as some believe that it puts women in a position of "neediness" of empowerment. As a reference to International Women's Day, this week we looked at the narrative of women empowerment from a different angle. Instead of women being empowered, we highlighted how women are empowering sustainability, and what is to come in the future.

Youth Engagement: The Green Spoon teams up with AIESEC UAE and Al Mawakeb Schools

24 February 2022

We were at the Future For Future Summit with AIESEC UAE and Al Mawakeb Schools where we presented our research project run with three different research groups to tackle pressing food sustainability issues for the UAE such as food imports, plastic pollution, and alternative protein sources.  Giving a voice to the leaders of tomorrow, The Food For Future was an unmatched opportunity to foster youth members' interest and leadership in sustainability.

As part of The Green Spoon's commitment to engaging youth in sustainability problems, a select group of young researchers were trained by The Green Spoon for Food Sustainability and critical research. The inaugural sessions were refreshing and intellectually stimulating, and more is yet to come!
